“It is better,” said Caiaphas, the High Priest in the year that Jesus died, “for one man to die than for the whole nation to perish.” This statement, John tells us, meant much more than what we hear on the surface. The story in the gospel of John intensifies as the religious leaders try to intimidate a man who was healed of blindness into saying that Jesus is a “sinner.” The blind man’s retort to their strong-arm approach, a confession of faith in Jesus, will be the next-to-last straw in a political game that will ultimately [...] “Let him who is without sin cast the first stone.” This phrase has become almost iconic of Jesus’ teachings. It reveals something about his spirit of mercy and forgiveness. If you aren’t careful, however, you may miss the NEXT THING that Jesus says in the story – something that you may find to be even more [...] Lots of people miss the point – even the cool ones in Judea – as Jesus takes the back door into Jerusalem for a few days of absolute mayhem.
